The harvest in the DOCa Rioja: a perfect moment to dive into the soul of wine country

The harvest in the DOCa Rioja is much more than an agricultural process; it is a celebration of culture, tradition, and a deep passion for wine. This time of year, typically spanning from September to October, sees the region come alive with activity and colour, offering a unique experience for wine lovers and wine tourism enthusiasts alike. But what makes the harvest season the best time to visit this renowned designation of origin?

During the harvest, Rioja’s vineyards transform into a sea of colours, beginning in Rioja Oriental and gradually spreading through Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Ripe grapes hang from the vines, ready to be picked, while the air is filled with the sweet aroma of must and the earthy scent of the soil. The fields, bathed in the gentle autumn light, offer spectacular landscapes that delight the eyes and provide a feast for photography lovers.

Unique Harvest Experiences

Many wineries in the DOCa Rioja open their doors to offer special visits during the grape harvest, allowing guests to witness the winemaking process first-hand. These visits often include wine tastings straight from the barrel, walks through the vineyards, grape picking, traditional grape stomping, and the chance to meet the winemakers behind each bottle. In addition, exclusive events such as harvest festivals or wine-paired dinners under the stars are specially organised for this time of year.
