Sierra Cantabria
Viñedos de Páganos is located in the Alava town of Páganos, between dolmens and archaeological sites, ancient chapels and medieval churches.
The winery shares space with the exceptional vineyard called El Puntido, an old word with meaning of landing, similar to the terrace that forms between the Sierra de Cantabria and the depression of the Ebro River. The area is under the influence of an Atlantic climate with nuances of Continental, sheltered from the cold northern winds thanks to the Sierra de Cantabria. The soils of this property, of clay-calcareous or clay-clay texture with a high mineral presence, confer to the vineyard, and therefore to the wine, a singular mineral character of extraordinary personality. Under it, a subsoil of sandstone, where the roots are introduced making the most of each hole. The Tempranillo variety, perfectly adapted to these soils, expresses in the wines the terroir in which the vineyard is planted.
The vineyard is a tenuous slope of 25 hectares oriented towards midday planted in 1975 with the Tempranillo variety on a loam-clayey soil with a subsoil of sandstone. Thanks to a yield limitation and a careful artisanal harvest, El Puntido wine is made.
Very close to there is La Nieta, a small plot of 1.75 hectares located on a loamy soil of little depth and thickness in which the Tempranillo variety is also obtained. With poorer soils than those of El Puntido and a completely different microclimate, and after subjecting the vine to a low vigor and production in a natural way, a high quality fruit is obtained with which La Nieta wine will be elaborated.
