Elciego

Elciego has a long-standing winemaking history, although its vineyards really expanded in the 16th and 17th centuries, multiplying production seven-fold. In the 19th century its wine production was 1,800,000 litres per year, the highest figure in Rioja Alavesa.

At present, 90% of the territory is agricultural land and the soil is mainly chalky, deep and spongy.

The main grape variety in Elciego is Tempranillo, followed by Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura and Malvasía.

The town does not just focus on wine, however, it also attaches great importance to art. Several architects have made their contribution to Elciego becoming a crucible where art, culture, wine, history, commerce and tourism combine.
