Hacienda El Ternero
Not just Wine, since the 11th Century - A 250 hectares estate in the heart of Rioja alta
THE ESTATE - Hacienda El Ternero is a 250 hectares enclave in the heart of Rioja alta. Its medieval origins go back to 1.077 AD, when the land belonged to the Santa María de Herrera Monastery. Sheltered by the Obarenes mountains, among spruce forests, stands a group of buildings that were formerly used as a monastery, military headquarters, school, hospital for pilgrims on the 'Camino de Santiago' and chapel, which remains open today to shelter our patron saint, the Virgen de la Pera.
THE WINERY - At the heart of the estate is the winery: stone buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries where we make our wines in an almost handcrafted way, which allows us to give them the attention they deserve. Within the walls of the former monastery our wines rest peacefully in French oak barrels, where over the time they become refined.
THE VINEYARD - A unique vineyard in one of the highest areas of Rioja - 650 meters-, which gives our vines a prime location which is subsequently reflected in our wines.
Vineyards of tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo and viura varieties, among others, surrounded by forests of piceas, holms and pinsapos. A privileged microclimate and our vines, some more than 50 years old, and ther orientation towards the midday sun, favor the production of grapes with exceptional natural conditions.
Shallow soils, with a high percentage of limestone, with different altitudes and orientations, surrounded by forests, mean that these vines grow in a unique environment, giving the grapes that they produce a special personality, perfect for elaborating aged-wines with the character of our estate.
