Reserva or crianza? How do they differ?

brindis

Have you ever wondered what distinguishes a Crianza wine from a Reserva?

These wines offer different characteristics and the choice between Crianza and Reserva becomes an exercise in personal preference and consideration of the context in which they will be appreciated.

Crianza

These are wines that are at least 2 years old and have spent at least one year in 225-litre oak barrels. For white and rosé wines, the minimum ageing period is 6 months. A Crianza wine always has a balance and harmony between the fruit aromas (primary aromas) and the wood aromas from the cask (secondary aromas).

This wine is ideal for more informal occasions and for those moments when you are looking for a versatile and accessible companion. Here are some suggestions:

  • Casual celebrations: Perfect for social gatherings, barbecues or relaxed dinners.
  • Everyday dishes: Perfect with everyday dishes such as pasta, grilled meats or soft cheeses.
  • Relatively early drinking: Given its fresh and fruity profile, it should be cellared in the first few years after bottling to make the most of its youthful characteristics.

Reserva

Corresponds to wines aged for a minimum of 3 years between barrel and bottle. Of which at least 1 year in barrel followed by a minimum of 6 months in bottle. For white and rosé wines, the ageing period is 2 years, including 6 months in 225-litre barrels. Reserve wines are more complex and usually have a greater variety of aromas: fruit (primary aromas), wood (secondary aromas) and, finally, ageing (tertiary aromas) such as tobacco, leather, truffle, etc.

Reserva are perfect for:

  • Special occasions: Reserva is the perfect choice for celebrations and memorable events. Its complexity and structure add a special touch.
  • Sophisticated gastronomy: Combines beautifully with more elaborate dishes and red meats. Its more robust structure complements the intense flavours.
  • Additional storage: Although Reservas are ready to drink, they can be kept for a few years to allow the secondary and tertiary aromas to develop.
When to Choose One Over the Other?

The choice between Crianza and Reserva depends on the occasion and personal taste. For an informal meal or a get-together with friends, the Crianza may be the perfect choice, with its freshness and balance playing a starring role. On the other hand, reserve a Reserva for special moments, elegant dinners or when you are looking to explore deeper layers of aromas and flavours.

In Rioja, every bottle is a reason to celebrate. So, which do you prefer today: the youthful elegance of a Crianza or the evolved sophistication of a Reserva? The choice is yours in this fascinating wine world! 🍷✨
