Ábalos

Ábalos was attached to San Vicente de la Sonsierra until 1657. On this date, Juan Mateo Hurtado de Velasco, lord of the town, agreed to the request by the residents of Ábalos to separate from San Vicente, although it continued under the control of the Counts of Haro and did not become an independent villa until 1726.

To this day, the town still preserves stone houses and the monuments, heritage of its past.

The Fernández de Navarretes were born here, one of the most outstanding families in the history of Rioja in recent centuries, with Martin Fernández de Navarrete standing out above the rest.

Grape growing occupies a fundamental place in the town, because, together with the wineries, it is the town’s main economic driver.
