Azagra
Description of the municipality
Azagra is a town, possibly of Arab origins, located between a 200-metre chalk hillock known as La Peña and the River Ebro, and these two features have marked its history.
The economy of the locality is based on agriculture: fruit, vegetables and grapes, with wine one of the main pillars. It also has agriculture-based industries, as the main sector is agrifood (especially deep-frozen products and jams).
It was in the Arab period (although the odd Roman settlement could have existed previously) that Azagra appears with its own name. Indeed, it is thought that the initial name of the town was Sajra, meaning crag in Arabic.
The outstanding features of the locality are its gastronomy, festivities, hospitality and fun-loving inhabitants, possibly the result of being a ‘border town’ throughout its history, with a mix of cultures, travellers and encounters.
