  • Two rosés from Rioja are first and second in the ranking: Classica Gran Reserva Rosado 2012, from Hacienda López de Haro, and Alma Tobía Único 2020, from Bodegas Tobía, top the ranking as number one and two in the world, respectively.
  • Another six DOCa wines complete the first 25 places in the ranking, making Rioja the wine region with the highest number of references in the world in the Top 25 of “The Rosé Report 2023“, prepared by the expert and Master of Wine Elizabeth Gabay.
  • In addition to topping the world podium, Rioja is the wine region with the highest number of references in Spain and the third in the world, according to the complete ranking, which has 224 wines classified in total.
  • “Rioja rosés are a revelation. Few regions, if any, combine such fascinating diversity and treat rosé wine with such seriousness and respect,” says MW.

The diversity and quality of the Rioja Qualified Designation of Origin are once again evident, this time through its rosé wines, which have obtained the best awards in “The Rosé Report 2023”, a report published by Club Oenologique, the famous publication specializing in wine and lifestyle, which belongs to the “International Wine and Spirit Competition” (IWSC) group.Report 2023“, a report published by Club Oenologique, the famous publication specializing in wine and lifestyle, which belongs to the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) and is aimed at wine lovers and experts.

Thus, Rioja has taken first and second place in the world ranking, with Classica Gran Reserva Rosado 2012, from Hacienda López de Haro, as number one in the world, and Alma Tobía Único 2020, from Bodegas Tobía, as number two.

Completing the top Rioja positions in the ranking are Akutain Rosado Gran Reserva 2016, Finca Allende Rosado 2017, Ripa Rosado 2019, 1890 Manzanos Rosé, Tierra de Mármol 2022, from Bodegas Tierra and Ondipuerko Rosado 2021, from Bodegas Vinícola Real.

With eight references, Rioja is the appellation in the world with the most rosés in the TOP 25 ranking, followed by the Southern Rhône region, with three rosés in the Top 25, and Côtes de Provence and Wienvertel, with two references each.

Looking at the complete ranking, which includes 224 brands of rosé wines from all over the world, the DOCa Rioja stands out from other wine regions at the national level: it is the Spanish appellation with the highest prevalence in the ranking, with 20 wine references recognized in the classification (the next Spanish DO with the most references has four). Internationally, the 20 DOCa Rioja wines included in the report rank it third in the world, behind Côtes de Provence AOP, with 46, and Souther Rhône, with 25.

The perfect balance between diversity and quality of Rioja rosés, as well as the wise integration between tradition and modernity of the DOCa have been differential aspects for the Master of Wine Elisabeth Gabay, in charge of the elaboration of ‘The Rosé Report 2023′:“Rioja rosés are a revelation. From a wide variety of terroirs and altitudes, you can find wines ranging from the most traditional to the most modern and innovative. Few regions, if any, combine such fascinating diversity and treat rosé wine with such seriousness and respect, at the level of a Gran Reserva and Reserva, thus creating a new dimension,” she says.

Elizabeth Gabay, considered the world’s leading expert on rosé wines, has a long career as a wine critic, writer and consultant. Author of the books “Rosé: Understanding the Rosé Wine Revolution” and “Rosés from the South of France“, she is a frequent contributor to publications such as Decanter, The Drinks Business and Meininger, among others. For the expert, in this report: “Rioja stood out for its masterful use of oak, the inclusion of white grapes and even its confident use of dark bottles. While many high-end rosés showcase the winemaker’s skills, often in isolation, Rioja wines stand out for their consistent quality across the entire Appellation”.

To carry out the classification, Gabay and his team tasted more than a thousand references of rosé wines from around the world, with a final selection of about 550 references, of which only 50% passed the cut and were included in the final report and ranking.

According to the expert, Rioja is an appellation that “stands out and excels” also in terms of rosés. According to the marketing figures of the latest balance sheet presented by the DOCa in February (which presents data for 2022), Rioja rosés consolidated their success, experiencing double-digit growth: 10.34% in the overall market (foreign and domestic), with a spectacular performance abroad, achieving growth of 24.84%.
