Discovering the Region’s Hidden Treasures
The classification of these wines is based on the uniqueness of their vineyards and their geographical origin, resulting in a wide range of flavours and styles. There are three main categories that stand out in the classification of Rioja wines: “Vinos Singulares”, “Vinos de Municipio” and “Vinos de Zona”. Each of these categories has unique characteristics that reflect the region’s rich winemaking heritage.
Rioja Single Vineyard Wine
Wine is much more than just a drink; it is an expression of the land, the culture and the passion of those who produce it. In Rioja, this passion for wine is translated into a special classification known as “Singular Wine”, which highlights the authenticity and uniqueness of certain vineyards and their production. Immerse yourself in the world of Rioja Singular wines and discover the hidden treasures of this exciting wine region.
Singular Vineyards
Within the world of Rioja wines, singular vineyards occupy a special place. They are like hidden treasures in the land of Rioja, and to be considered as such, they must meet a series of rigorous requirements that guarantee their authenticity and uniqueness.
- Growth control: The “Singular Vineyards” maintain a balance and limited vigour in the vines during the ripening of the grapes, which intensifies their flavours.
- Single topping: A single topping per plant is allowed in these vineyards to control the number of buds and clusters.
- Handpicking: The grapes are harvested by hand, guaranteeing careful selection and preserving quality.
- Rigorous documentation: A declaration of intent is required by 30 June and a wine declaration drawn up to meet “Single Vineyard” standards.
- Essential requirements: These vineyards must meet specific requirements, including minimum age of vines, exclusive availability of production and limits on production per hectare. Strict physical controls are carried out and a special winegrower’s card is issued.
“Singular vineyards” are at the heart of the authenticity of Rioja wines. Each bottle tells a unique story and transports wine lovers to the land of Rioja, where tradition, care and passion come together to create unforgettable tasting experiences. These wines are the essence of Rioja in every sip, and their uniqueness makes them truly one of a kind.
From the Municipality
Each label is a living postcard of Rioja’s geography. These wines are a tribute to a place, to a community. They carry the identity of their people and their land. It is as if you were tasting the history and tradition of Rioja in each glass.
The “Municipio” wines are a celebration of Rioja’s diversity. Each municipality has its own character, its own microclimate, and this is reflected in the wine. To taste a wine from this category is to connect with the history and culture of Rioja in a very personal way. It is like a sensory journey through the landscapes and people of the region.
Outstanding Characteristics:
- Grapes grown exclusively in the municipality of origin.
- Production, ageing and bottling in the same area.

From the area
This “Vino de Zona” classification recognises the labelling under the nomenclature of the corresponding zone: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. With production, ageing and bottling and grapes exclusively from the area, our exploration culminates in the “De Zona” category.
Each area of Rioja has its own character, climate and soil, and this is reflected in the wine, which reflects the identity of the territory. They are like chapters in a great novel, each one telling a part of Rioja’s history and revealing the peculiarities of its geographical origin.
